The mountain town of Kalavryta
Kalavryta is a historical town of Eparchy. It was built on the same site as
the ancient Kynaithes. It lies at 756 m above sea level at the foot of Mount
Velia only 40 km from Diakopto. An unforgettable experience is to travel to
Kalavryta with the cog railway starting in Diakopto going through the gorge of
Vouraikos. On the 13th of December, 1943 German troops committed a massacre
here. They killed 1,436 men and boys over the age of 14 and burnt down the town.
The clock of the Metropolitan church shows the hour of the massacre from 1943:
2:34 pm. Nearby there is the famous monastery of Aghia Lavra and the unique
stalactite cave of the mythical lakes of Kastria. In the winter the Chelmos
Mountains (2,300 m above sea level) located 14 km from Kalavryta offer
skiing.
Diakofto – a provincial town with
atmosphere
The provincial town of Diakopto is situated at the Gulf of Corinth and at the
lower gorge of Vouraikos. A cog railway, built by French engineers (1885-95)
leads up through the gorge to the famous town of Kalavryta. At the outskirts of
Diakopto the lovely beach of Engali invites you for a swim at its sandy
beach. |
