The region of Aigialia in Eastern Achaia – Peloponnese -Greece: In the
centre of antiquity and off the mass tourism
The coastal region of Aigialia (with its capital Aigion) in the east of
Achaia is one of the most beautiful and most interesting areas of the northern
Peloponnese. Athens is in a distance of 185 km (airports of Athen-Eleftherios
Venizelos) and Patras, the capital of the district Achaia, only 30 km (airport
of Araxos near Patras). The distinctive of this wonderful landscape is the
contrast between the fantastic clean bays of the Corinthean gulf (Aigialia
means coastal line), the fertile plain (citrus fruit and olive trees), the
covered hills (viniculture with currants) and imposing mountains in the
background.
In this mountainous landscape you will find typical mountain villages, hidden
monasteries and forgotten antique sites. At the bottom of the Chelmos mountain (
2340 m), a popular skiing area of this region, there is the famous town of
Kalavryta which is to be reached from the coastal village Diakofto through the
Vouraikos gorge by cogwheel railway or by car. The most important archaeological
sites (Olympia, Delphi, Korinth, Epidaurus, Mykene and Athens) are slightly
accessible from here in a day trip.
