The ancient Mykene (also Mykane or Mykines) – Day trip Mykene was one of the most important towns of Greece in the classical era. The town lies in the plains of Argos, on the road between southern Peloponnese and the Isthmus of Corinth, connecting the peninsula with Athens and northern Greece. It is only 150 km away from Longos. Mykene was the centre of prehistoric Hellenic civilisation and is known as the capital of Atreus and Agamemnon. Homer called Mykene the golden rich and beautiful town. The cyclopean masonry with its lion's gate is the oldest monumental relief. Here also lies the circle of tombs “A”, royal tombs full of gold, silver, and ivory, which was discovered by H. Schliemann. Any site of ancient Mykene is worth visiting. Tholos, the famous grave of Agamemnon, and the treasury of Atreus are some of the most important archaeological sites of Mykene. The precious treasures of Mykenes are exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.
